GLOW Projects
Our GLOW Projects initiative provides funding and support for girl-led advocacy initiatives, giving girls the opportunity to pitch and implement projects that address critical issues in their communities. As they bring their ideas to life, they build critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills while learning to be effective advocates for change.
Global Girls Glow incubates girl-led projects designed by girls, for girls, to create community-wide impact. When GLOW Girls identify a challenge facing girls and women in their community, GLOW Projects offer them the opportunity to apply their GLOW Club skills — such as advocacy, leadership, public speaking, and more — to drive meaningful change.
Over the past five years, we’ve incubated 30 girl-led community impact projects across 20 countries, addressing issues such as combating period poverty, improving literacy among girls, and increasing access to education for girls. As of 2024, four projects are being implemented in India, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone.
Radio Program, Sierra Leone
Our girl-led radio program in Sierra Leone, which began airing in 2017, has connected an estimated 10,000 throughout the country with educational information about girls’ rights and challenges. Through this project, GLOW Club members have a weekly segment on a national radio program to share their personal experiences, lessons from the GLOW Club curriculum, and actions listeners can take to support girls. In 2024, information shared in the radio program contributed to the passing of Sierra Leone’s Prohibition of Child Marriage Bill 2024, which outlawed child marriage throughout the country.
Menstrual Health Project, India
Through our menstrual health project, girls work directly with women in their communities to provide menstrual health education and combat period poverty. In a rural area where the majority of families can’t afford sanitary pads, girls assist with leading workshops that teach women how to manufacture their own reusable pads. As of 2024, nearly 600 women and girls have been impacted by the project, and 90% of project participants have begun making their own pads at home.
Education Initiative, Rwanda
After recognizing the issue of school dropouts for girls in their communities, GLOW Club Alumni in Rwanda implemented a Community Action Plan to bring girls back to school. Leveraging their skills in advocacy, self-confidence, and decision-making, these alumni engage with their communities to identify educational barriers, share this information with local schools to facilitate readmissions, and raise tuition funds—leading 60 girls to return to the classroom.
