A Brighter Future for Native American and Indigenous Youth: Our Newest Initiative
At Global Girls Glow, we’re building the next generation of powerful advocates and confident leaders by providing mentorship, support, and skills training to girls in some of the most marginalized communities around the world. This year, we’re thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our journey to create a world where girls lead: We’re bringing our programs to Native American and Indigenous youth in select cities across the United States.
The systemic challenges facing Indigenous youth are monumental. Financial barriers and lack of educational opportunities keep many girls from reaching their full potential, while violence against Indigenous women often goes unprosecuted. Tragically, suicide is among the leading causes of death for Native children between the ages of 10 – 19.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Women Moving Millions Power and Influence Fund, we’re partnering with Indigenous-led organizations in New Mexico and other select Tribal Nations to bring our signature mentorship program, GLOW Club, to Native American and Indigenous girls in the United States.
Why This Expansion Matters
GLOW Club is a mentorship program designed to ignite the power of girls. Through a curriculum of hands-on activities that build Social and Emotional Learning skills, girls develop their confidence and practice using their voice as they build lasting relationships with peers and learn to advocate for themselves and others.
Clubs are led by trusted local mentors: Positive female role models who come from the same communities as the girls they serve and adapt our curriculum to that specific tribe’s cultural context.
Our new GLOW Clubs in Native American and Indigenous communities will offer a tailored approach to girls’ empowerment that respects and integrates the cultural values and traditions of Native American communities.
We aim to provide these young women — some of the most vulnerable in the county — with role models who understand their experiences and can provide them with the support and encouragement they need to speak out against systemic injustice and build lives of their own design.
In Farmington, New Mexico, one of our newest implementing partners is already noticing the impact GLOW Clubs can have on the confidence, self-worth, and future aspirations of local girls.
“We are excited to offer the GLOW Club curriculum, which combined with rich cultural integration, will empower our Indigenous girls to shine as confident leaders,” says Dr. Geraldine Garrity, the Director of Native American Programs at Farmington Municipal Schools who is beginning to implement GLOW Club for high school students. “Navajo girls are natural-born leaders, both in their homes and in the community, and this program will help strengthen their voices and leadership skills.”
