Backyard Carnival: How a Young Girl Fundraised for Girls’ Education

By

In May 2022, Ellora organized and hosted a carnival in her backyard to raise money for girls and women around the world. Ellora’s carnival featured games and activities that she organized herself. Read about Ellora’s passion and effort to support access to education for women and girls, in her own words:

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hello, my name is Ellora. I’m 10 years old and I am homeschooled in California.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love practicing gymnastics tricks in my front yard and helping my sister learn tricks. I also like to read fiction.

What do you want to do when you grow up?

I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.  I’m interested in gymnastics, helping people and animals, and teaching.

Tell us a little bit about your fundraising project.

I’m in a history book club and I was learning about women’s suffrage. After learning about women’s rights, I decided I wanted to help with women’s issues today. I determined that I wanted to help with education because if girls are educated they will know what to do in other situations. My mom told me that her friend Crystal was the director of Global G.L.O.W.  I researched Global G.L.O.W. to learn more about you and decided I wanted to support you by organizing a fundraiser.

What made you want to host a carnival?

I did not want to do another lemonade stand because I had already done one for Guide Dogs of America, so I researched different types of fundraisers and found a lot of games that I liked. I could not pick just one game, so I decided to do all of them in a small carnival fundraiser that would be fun for my friends.

What did you like the most about fundraising?

I like knowing that people will be helped because of what I am doing. It is also really fun to plan and host events!

What did you like least about the fundraising and/or carnival planning?

I think that the bit that I disliked the most about getting ready and preparing for my carnival was asking for donations. It was embarrassing to ask for something for free instead of buying it, but I understood the proceeds for Global G.L.O.W. would be more, so it was worth it.

What is a positive change you want to see in the world?

I want to see that women are treated equally to men in all ways.

What is your wish or dream for other girls around the world?

I wish for other girls to get a good education so they can live a successful happy life, with equal pay, safety, and respect
