How Nuri is Bridging the Gender Gap in Computer Science

By

By Nuri, Global Girls Glow Youth Correspondent, Detroit GLOW Club Alumni, and current junior at Wayne State University

For far too long, women and girls around the world have been deprived of the same opportunities as men. Although some progress has been made in increasing women’s participation in the workforce, one critical area remains urgently in need of attention: the representation of women in STEM, especially in computer science.

The persistent gender gap in computer science demands urgent attention. Women and young girls remain underrepresented in this field, limiting their opportunities to influence future breakthroughs. Often perceived as a male-dominated field, computer science is plagued by assumptions that only men can excel or show interest in STEM careers. In reality, women, like me, are deeply passionate about using STEM to make a difference in the world.

As a computer science major myself, I have come to recognize the importance of developing an inclusive space for all girls and supporting their interests in computer science: an environment where we feel empowered to learn, innovate, and pursue our passions without limits.

My Experience as a Woman in Computer Science

Being a young woman in computer science has been both challenging and rewarding. On one hand, the field is dynamic and full of opportunities to innovate and solve complex problems, allowing me to feel as though I am contributing to something impactful. On the other hand, the underrepresentation of women often means facing stereotypes and biases that can be discouraging and undermining of things I am truly capable of.

“Seeing so few other girls interested in the same subjects sometimes made me question my interests and passion — simply because of my gender.”

In many of my past classes, I found myself among only a few women interested in engineering and computer science. This sometimes made me feel isolated, and there were instances when my contributions were overlooked or underestimated because I was one of the few who seemed excited about a project. Seeing so few other girls interested in the same subjects sometimes made me question my interests and passion — simply because of my gender. This environment can make it difficult to feel confident and valued, especially when surrounded by peers who may not face the same challenges related to their gender.

Nuri is a junior at one of Michigan’s largest universities, Wayne State University, where she majors in computer science.

However, these experiences have also fostered a strong sense of camaraderie among the women I’ve met in computer science. We support each other, share resources, and celebrate each other’s achievements. This small network of like-minded individuals has been crucial in navigating the challenges we face, reinforcing the importance of solidarity and mentorship as we push for inclusivity and representation.

Why I’m Passionate About Combating the Gender Gap

Yale Scientific reports that only 18.7% of undergraduate degrees in computer science are awarded to women, a decrease from around 37% in 1984. The steady decline in degrees awarded to women occurred around the same time personal computers became popular in households, largely marketed to young boys and men. This gave them an early advantage in developing computing skills and learning concepts like data structures and algorithms. Having access to these computers allowed boys to develop confidence and interest in pursuing computer science, while the increasing perception of computing as a male-dominated field discouraged many girls and women from pursuing careers in this field.

“I have witnessed firsthand the transformation that occurs when women are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and make mistakes in computer science. And I know that it builds character, resilience, and critical problem-solving skills.”

This stark statistic alone fuels my passion for combating the gender gap in computer science. It is important for me to be a part of this change because I understand the value, importance, and unique perspectives women bring to the field. Our diverse viewpoints can drive innovation and lead to more comprehensive and effective technological solutions.

I believe our gender shouldn’t define our capabilities or aspirations. I have actively participated in programs that promote the idea of women in computer science, not just in college but as a sustainable career. I have witnessed firsthand the transformation that occurs when women are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and make mistakes in computer science. And I know that it builds character, resilience, and critical problem-solving skills.

A Girl-Led Digital World Is Possible

When women and girls are not given a chance to demonstrate their capabilities, it hinders potential for growth and positive change. Increasing the representation of women in computer science ensures that the field evolves inclusively and benefits all. As a community of advocates for women and girls, we must recognize the importance of gender diversity not only in the workplace but also in education, where the journey begins.

“The inclusion of women and girls in tech is crucial for a cohesive world in this digital age.”

By openly talking about these challenges and actively listening to girls, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment that empowers everyone – regardless of their gender – to thrive in computer science.

The inclusion of women and girls in tech is crucial for a cohesive world in this digital age. Encourage the women and girls in your lives to pursue their passions and grow in their careers — we deserve the chance to help our communities move in a positive direction and shape the future of technology!
