The Global HerStory Summit and International Day of the Girl: Empowering Girls Around the World
Next week, we will join girls and women around the world to celebrate International Day of the Girl on Thursday, October 11th. The day was declared by the United Nations as one “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.”
Despite the fact that the UN has designated a single day to celebrate International Day of the Girl, it’s so much more than that; it’s an entire movement. To Global G.L.O.W., IDG is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the injustices girls face every day so we can all work together for global transformation.
WHEN GIRLS WIN, WE ALL DO
Investing in girls is smart for all of us. Women could increase their income globally by up to 76% if employment and wage gaps between women and men were closed. This is calculated to have a global value of USD 17 trillion. Educated girls are also healthier and will raise healthier families. If all girls received 12 years of education, there would be 64% fewer child marriages and child deaths would decrease by 49%. This movement is not just about girls. It’s about bettering the future for everyone.
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
Below are four ways you can help #GlobalGirlsGLOW as we countdown to International Day of the Girl.
JOIN US FOR A TWITTER CHAT

THE 2018 GLOBAL HERSTORY SUMMIT
The Global HerStory Summit (GHS) brings together girls from across the worldwide HerStory network for a five day conference in New York City. The HerStory Ambassadors who attend share their stories and experiences, learn from one another, and create Community Action Plans (CAPS); girl-designed projects to address challenges women and girls are facing locally. This year, we will have 45 girls and mentors attend the summit from 9 program sites (3 U.S. sites and 6 international program sites).
We will be posting highlights from the summit on our social channels all week, be sure to follow the girls on their journey and join this important conversation using #GlobalGirlsGLOW and #HerStoryCampaign. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL
Through our partnership with the UN’s Working Group on Girls, our HerStory Ambassadors will attend the annual Girls Speak Out event at UN Headquarters on the International Day of the Girl (Thursday, October 11th) and share their ideas for leading meaningful, sustainable community change. Be sure to look out for instructions on viewing our live stream of the event, coming soon!
